Where to stay near the Temple of Heaven

The Temple of Heaven is a large park of about 273 hectares with four gates, so the useful question is which gate your hotel is close to. Choose an area first, then check the hotel address against the gate you plan to use. Two metro lines serve the park: Line 5 at the East Gate and Line 8 at the West Gate.

If you would rather have a guide, see our Temple of Heaven tours. Tickets are booked by name with a passport; the Temple of Heaven tickets page has the steps.

Three areas compared

All three work with the metro. Door-to-gate times depend on the exact hotel, so check your route before you book.

For most first visits, Qianmen and Dashilan make the best base: you stay in a lively old quarter and take the metro to the park. If the park itself and an early start come first, stay on the East Gate side.

The areas in detail

What each base offers and what to check.

Qianmen and Dashilan

Qianmen Street is 840 m long and runs from Yueliangwan Park in the north to Tianqiao South Street. It has traditional brands, restaurants, clothing and souvenir shops. Dashilan is a shopping lane of about 275 m just west of it, and the shopping district lies about 100 m south of Qianmen station on Line 2. The Zhengyangmen gate tower reopened on 27 July 2026: it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00, closed on Mondays except public holidays, and costs CNY 20 per person. Not every hotel here is equally close to a Temple of Heaven gate. Qianmen Street guide โ†’

East Gate side

This is the area around Tiantandongmen station on Line 5, and you may see it searched as Chongwen. The East Gate is the entrance with a footbridge to the Hongqiao market, which sells pearls and accessories. If you want the park at 06:00 or 06:30, a hotel close to Tiantandongmen station makes the trip simple. Check the exact address against the gate.

Wangfujing

Wangfujing is a metro station on Line 8, the same line that stops at Tianqiao for the West Gate. That makes it a workable metro-based choice if the Temple of Heaven is part of a wider city trip. Look at the stops between your hotel and Tianqiao in your map app.

How to choose

  • Pick the gate first. The East Gate and West Gate sit on opposite sides of the park. The main sights run from south to north, so decide where you want to enter.
  • Plan the morning. The park opens at 06:00 from 1 April to 31 October and at 06:30 from 1 November to 31 March. The halls open at 08:00. A hotel with an easy metro link makes the early hours simple.
  • Avoid Mondays for the halls. They close on Mondays except public holidays, so use a Monday for the city and the park grounds.
  • Check the real route. A pin on the map is not a route. Look up the stops, the exit and the walk from the exit to the hotel.

A day plan from any of the three bases

How the opening hours fit together from 1 April to 31 October.

Morning

The park opens at 06:00 and the halls at 08:00. Spend the first hours on the grounds, then walk the main sights from the altar in the south to the Hall of Prayer in the north. See Tiantan Park in the morning for what to expect.

Midday

Leave by the East Gate for a stroll through the Hongqiao market. The halls take their last entry at 17:30 and close at 18:00, so you have time. From 1 November the last entry is 16:30.

Afternoon and evening

Head to Qianmen for the street, Dashilan and dinner. If you want to go up the Zhengyangmen tower, arrive before 17:00 and not on a Monday.
