The Echo Wall and the Imperial Vault of Heaven at a glance

The Echo Wall (Huiyinbi, ๅ›ž้Ÿณๅฃ) is the round boundary wall of the courtyard around the Imperial Vault of Heaven (Huangqiongyu, ็š‡็ฉนๅฎ‡). It lies on the line between the Circular Mound Altar in the south and the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests in the north. The wall is made of dense, smooth, carefully fitted bricks, and its curve helps sound travel along the inside surface.

The Echo Wall belongs to the same ticketed area as the hall and the altar. The combined ticket (CNY 34 from 1 April to 31 October, CNY 28 from 1 November to 31 March, as of 2026) covers it, and so does the separate ticket for these three sights (CNY 20). There is no extra Echo Wall ticket and no fee for the acoustics. Details are on our Temple of Heaven tickets page; if you would rather hear the background from a guide, compare the Temple of Heaven tours.

What the Imperial Vault of Heaven was for

The little round hall in the middle of the courtyard has its own role.

1530: first built

The Vault was built in 1530 in the same year as the Circular Mound Altar.

1538: renamed and enlarged

It received its name Huangqiongyu in 1538 and was extended at the same time.

1752: today's shape

A rebuilding in 1752 gave the Vault the form you see now: a round hall on a base, 19.5 m high and 15.6 m across.

Not a residence

The Vault held the tablets of the spirits of Heaven and the imperial ancestors that were used in the sacrifice. It was a storehouse for ritual objects, not a living hall.

Echo Wall or Triple Sound Stones: two different effects

Visitors mix up two things in this courtyard. They work in different ways.

FeatureWhat it isHow it works
Echo WallThe round courtyard wallSmooth, tight bricks and the curve help sound travel along the inner face
Triple Sound StonesStones on the path in the courtyardSound reflects off the walls and the side halls
Heart StoneThe central stone of the Circular Mound AltarA separate effect at another monument

In a quiet moment, these effects can be impressive. In a busy courtyard they are not. Treat the sound as a possible bonus and the architecture as the reason to come. For the nearby altar and its Heart Stone, see the Circular Mound Altar page.

Can you still whisper along the wall?

The wall is protected. A railing has kept visitors away from the bricks since at least 2013, to protect them from damage. That does not mean the courtyard is closed: the Echo Wall stays in the ticketed area. How close you can stand and where the staff want you to go is something the signs show on the day.

Do not count on pressing your mouth to the brick and having a friend hear you across the courtyard. If it works, enjoy it. If it does not, you still see one of the most famous pieces of Ming and Qing acoustic design. Never write on or lean on the wall.

Planning your visit

Timing decides how much you get out of the courtyard.

Go early

The monuments open at 08:00. Fewer voices in the courtyard give the sound a better chance. Last entry is 17:30 from 1 April to 31 October and 16:30 from 1 November to 31 March.

Opening hours โ†’

Not on Mondays

Since 1 September 2026 the Echo Wall, the hall and the altar are closed on Mondays again, except on public holidays.

Walk on to the hall

From the Vault, the raised Danbi bridge leads north to the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. The path is 360 m long and rises towards the hall.

Bring patience

Groups come and go in waves. Give the courtyard a few minutes rather than judging it in seconds.

Echo Wall: frequently asked questions

How does the Echo Wall work?

The wall is made of dense, smooth, tightly fitted bricks and is curved. That helps sound travel along its inner face. The effect is not guaranteed and depends on how many people are around.

Do I need a separate ticket for the Echo Wall?

No. It is in the same ticketed area as the hall and the altar. The combined ticket covers the park and all three; the separate ticket for the three sights costs CNY 20 as of 2026.

What is the Imperial Vault of Heaven?

A small round hall in the centre of the courtyard, built in 1530 and rebuilt into its present form in 1752. It kept the tablets used in the sacrifice to Heaven.

What are the Triple Sound Stones?

Stones in the courtyard where sound reflects off the walls and the side halls. It is a different effect from the Echo Wall and from the Heart Stone at the altar.

Is the Echo Wall open on Mondays?

No. Since 1 September 2026 it closes on Mondays again, except on public holidays, together with the hall and the altar.
